I left out one of the recent hate activities of the Family Research Council : condoning, encouraging, the abduction of children, including both biological children and adopted children, from legal same sex parents, and attempting to interfere with the parental rights of same-sex parents. The FRC has promoted fake research to claim that same-sex parents pose a danger to their children, which is not merely wrong, but a truly horrible and vicious lie. If it were for no other reason than promoting this lie, the FRC would deserve their hate label. But clearly there is a host of other reasons for the designation.
These smug, ignorant, self-righteous hateful people do terrible harm to so many people with their hatred and fear, in the name of religion.
Details about the shooter, released by the FBI, and the shooting have been condemned by numerous LGBT groups, even before any motive of anti-anti-gay conflict has been identified.
NOM, aka the National Organization for Marriage, and the FRC are blaming the Southern Poverty Law Center for identifying the FRC as a hate group - a designation for characterizing LGBT individuals as pedophiles, advocating for the exile, imprisonment, genital electro-shock, and sometimes castration of gays --- as well as encouraging the abduction of their children and denying gay parents the right to be parents.
It's not the label, it's the actions that earned the FRC the label of hate group that is the problem.
Unlike the FRC and the NOM which agitate for hate and violence, LGBT groups have condemned the violence of the shooting.

LGBT Groups Condemn Attack At FRC HQ As Shooter Identified
The FBI has identified the shooter at the Family Research Council as 28 year old Floyd Lee Cordins of Herndon, Virginia. Even as this information comes, the FRC and the National Organization for Marriage are already trying to play the victim blaming the Southern Poverty Law Center for designating the FRC as a hate group and saying that this was what caused the attack.
NOM’s Brian Brown stated that:
Condemnation of the attack was swift- from the LGBT Community. Continuing from the same article:

LGBT Groups Condemn Attack At FRC HQ As Shooter Identified
NOM’s Brian Brown stated that:
“Today’s attack is the clearest sign we’ve seen that labeling pro-marriage groups as ‘hateful’ must end. The Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled the Family Research Council a ‘hate group’ for its pro-marriage views, and less than a day ago the Human Rights Campaign issued a statement calling FRC a ‘hate group’—they even specified that FRC hosts events in Washington, DC, where today’s attack took place.NOM has never condemned anti-gay violence or hate crimes, but rather tried to wash their hands of their own hateful rhetoric when addressing the issue of hatred. They have also never denounced the FRC for calling for calling for LGBT people to be imprisoned, and they constantly and consistently use anti-gay rhetoric. NOM did not even condemn the late Mike Leisner for setting fire to the lawn at General Mills.
“NOM has always condemned all violence and vilification connected to our ongoing national debate about the meaning and definition of marriage. For too long national gay rights groups have intentionally marginalized and ostracized pro-marriage groups and individuals by labeling them as ‘hateful’ and ‘bigoted’ — such harmful and dangerous labels deserve no place in our civil society and NOM renews its call today for gay rights groups and the Southern Poverty Law Center to withdraw such incendiary rhetoric from a debate that involves millions of good Americans. Violence is never the answer, and on that we all must agree, or risk the consequences.”
Condemnation of the attack was swift- from the LGBT Community. Continuing from the same article:
BoxTurtleBullitain stated:
And as vile and despicable as I find FRC – as indicated by their absurd suggestions that it’s the Southern Poverty Law Center’s fault for accurately describing them as a hate group – there is absolutely no excuse for this act. I have nothing but contempt for Mr. Corkins’ behavior or for any rhetoric that seeks to excuse Mr. Corkins for this act.
Twenty-five LGBT organizations also condemned the attack even as we do not know the motives behind Corkins’ attack:
We were saddened to hear news of the shooting this morning at the offices of the Family Research Council. Our hearts go out to the shooting victim, his family, and his co-workers.
The motivation and circumstances behind today’s tragedy are still unknown, but regardless of what emerges as the reason for this shooting, we utterly reject and condemn such violence. We wish for a swift and complete recovery for the victim of this terrible incident.

That's really the difference, bottom line (location pun intended); the LGBT community condemns violence; the FRC encourages it by promoting every possible lying pretext for hatred and fear, and in some cases overt violence.
