City of Austin files counter-petition to secede from Texas

The petition for Texas to go off and become its own country already has more than 60,000 signatures. Impressive. But in a twist, the capital city of Austin has filed a petition to secede from Texas and remain part of the Union should that happen. This is officially getting out of hand. The petition states it is "entirely feasible for Austin to operate as its own state," and adds that remaining in the Union "would protect [its] citizens' standard of living." The drafters might want to go in and correct a few typos to be really taken seriously, but as of this writing, the petition has received more than 5,000 votes out of 25,000 needed for a White House response.

The petition appears on the White House web site, and it is worth noting that the city of Austin, Texas has a population of 820,611 as of the most recent census data:

we petition the obama administration to:

Peacefully grant the city of Austin Texas to withdraw from the state of Texas & remain part of the United States.

Austin Texas continues to suffer difficulties stemming from the lack of civil, religious, and political freedoms imposed upon the city by less liberally minded Texans. It is entirely feasible for Austin to operate as its own state, within the United States, in the event that Texas is successful in the current bid to secede. It is important for Austin to remain in the union as to do so would protect it's citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers.
We would also like to annex Dublin Texas, Lockhart Texas, & Shiner Texas.

  1. ICYMI, Minnesota is less than 5,000 away from meeting the treshold the White House requires ... but I guess we should not be surprised since the Fifth District MNGOP endorsed a resolution for succession in 2010 that the Second District also considered. The petition can be found here.

  2. Thanks Mac, I will be posting another update tonight or tomorrow. All 50 states have some wing nuts.

One of the news articles noted that there was also a petition requesting the president 'do the Hokey pokey'.

On the other hand, somewhat subdued right wing governors like Rick Perry are opposing these petitions.

It takes a lot to be further right than Rick Perry -- I suspect the fools signing this thing are actually EMBARRASSING Perry and the other governors.
