"I look at this first as a mother. This is just every mother's worst nightmare. Your daughter is enjoying a beautiful summer day at the pool, and suddenly your life is changed forever. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time this has happened. There are laws we can pass to strengthen the safety standards and prevent this from occurring again." --- Senator Amy Klobuchar
That's the type leadership statement is what I want our Members of Congress to work for ... too bad, Senator Klobuchar was not talking about any of the stories that appear in the news far too often --- such as, Minneapolis five-year Nizzel George who was fatally shot ... she was talking about an open drain hole in a wading pool at the Minneapolis Golf Club. Senator Klobuchar had no problem leading the campaign to enact federal legislation impacting the swimming pool industry at a private facility ... where is she on firearms ?
What does she have to lose ... she was targeted by the NRA in previously elections and has a "F" rating ... and does not face the voters until 2018. Senator Joe Biden exhibited leadership in passing the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 and that did not prevent him from seeking the Presidency or disqualify him from being selected as Obama's running mate ... regardless if Senator Klobuchar has higher aspirations, there is no reason why she should not lead now .... if for nothing more than to offset the criticism that Senator Franken will take.
Consider this Between two and three Minnesota children age 14 and under are killed or injured by gunfire every week ... further an estimated 19,770 Minnesota children are living in households that contain unlocked and loaded guns yet our elected leaders seem to rather regulate swimming pool dangers and worry about copper scrap thefts.
Gotta vent ... I start the day by catching up on the important news by reading Penigma ... then onto my email. First one I read is from Senator Franken acknowleding President Obama for his leadership on implementing mental health parity. It’s an important victory that will make our nation more compassionate and our communities safer. Then I read one from Senator Klobuchar entitled "Hockey Sticks" : Mac ,
I had a busy week meeting with businesses, workers, and farmers across Minnesota. Neither snow nor freezing rain stopped us from our twenty-six county journey, but we did make sure to keep our hockey sticks in the car after visiting with the Chamber of Commerce at the Sawmill Inn in Grand Rapids. The sign below reads: "Absolutely NO hockey sticks allowed in the hotel! Regulation or miniature size."
It goes on from there ... no mention of gun violence or the President's proposals ... but there is a mention of meeting in Moorhead with law enforcement from both states to highlight the legislation I recently introduced to make it harder for thieves to steal and sell stolen copper piping and other metals.
When will Senator Klobuchar realize that GUNS are are biggest problems ... not hockey sticks or copper thieves ? ? ?
I am warm in a tepid sort of way about AKlo, but I think Franken is a much much better senator, in every way, including just the way he organizes his office to serve constituents, as well as his legislative efforts.
