Revisiting Hiroshima, the cold war, and examining myth versus reality

It is NOT the 60th anniversary of Hiroshima; that was in 2005. However there are some interesting facts and theories being circulated about the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, no as a means to end World War II in the Pacific theater, but as the next step in the cold war against our ally / "frenemy" / enemy, the Soviet Union / Russia.  Frankly, I think it is pretty evident that despite efforts by the Russians to sanitize his image, Stalin was one of the greatest monsters of history.  I applaud the noting of the lack of importance we give to the Soviet Union for their part in WW II however.

I tend to dislike the film work of Oliver Stone, and I don't know much about his sidekick in this recent history project, or how accurate, versus how revisionist it might be. It does interest me, because I like my history factual, not warmed over or re-written by people who try to change the facts to make a version of reality they like better - a tendency that is far more of a chronic problem on the right than on the left.

This actually goes to an earlier conversation between my co-blogger Pen and I on the topic of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan in 1945. Because I promised I would get to it eventually, to fact checking these assertions he had already encountered, consider this a down -payment Pen on that promise. I'm not done looking, but wanted you to know I hadn't forgotten either.
