That appears to be happening in, of all places, Texas, per the AP. It seems that most of the 99% of this country share the views of progressives when it comes to the culture war issues. ALEC advocates for ALEC special interests, nothing more, nothing less.
Progressives call for Texas lawmakers to quit group that pushes conservative state laws
Progress Texas said 82 Texas legislators from both parties took $16.2 million from members of the American Legislative Exchange Council over the last 10 years. Better known as ALEC, the corporate-funded group produces model laws and asks legislators to introduce them in their states. But the group has run into trouble recently for supporting voter identification, immigration and self-defense laws that some say represent a social conservative agenda beyond its pro-business focus.
Corporations including Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Kraft and Intuit have canceled their membership in ALEC in recent weeks to distance themselves from ALEC. The group says it advocates for free market policies and is needed now more than ever.
This post is getting a lot of attention. Suggestion was given to keep pushing this. Go true democracy!
ReplyDeleteI want to see these legislators known or believed to be participants of ALEC FOIA'd to see just how they are connected.
ReplyDeleteIt is a start, and everyone from citizens, to the media, to opposing political candidates and parties should be doing this.
However much they bluster and double down, this is having an important effect on their secret special interest activities. They ARE sweating. And the extent to which their repressive activities are unpopular - voter ID, shoot first laws, etc. It is unpopular with the corporations and it sure as heck is unpopular with their consumers.
