The Casual Liar

CBS News reports that during the waning days of the 2008 Presidential race, Sarah Palin apparently attempted to deceive her own campaign staffers, as well as the campaign manager of the McCain-Palin ticket about Todd Palin's membership in the Alaskan Independence Party (AIP) (read the link here (Story)).

In short, she wanted the story squashed, so she first tried to press for a comment covering it. When the campaign manager refused - she attempted to cover Todd's participation by lying about his intent, stating it was to register as an independent - not be part of the AIP. As Schmidt, the campaign manager points out, Todd was apparently 'mistakenly' a member of AIP for 7 years, and Sarah, while Governor, "mistakenly" recorded a message for the 2008 AIP convention. AIP's sole plank is secession - so apparently Governor Palin "mistakenly" recorded a greeting message for this party which Todd was "mistakenly" a member of for 7 years.

Schmidt rightly pointed out that Todd was clearly a member, that Palin should ignore it rather than exaggerate the issue, and that lying about Todd's participation would only hurt the campaign.

So apparently sweet little Sarah is in fact a political conniver, a schemer, and willing to lie about little things to the American public. In short, she's Bush in a skirt.

  2. The Alaskan Independence Party actually would like a referendum on becoming an independent country. They believe that the vote in the late 50's was flawed, that it did not conform to the requirements for a territory to become a state consistent with the United Nations rules and regs.

This is about as legally valid as Texas becoming a separate country again. At least Texas at one time WAS a separate country.

Adding to the confusion and misinformation is the Fox News version of how Alaska became a state. Mr. Beck seems to be under the illusion that the U.S. bought Alaska in the 1950's; for the oil.

Of course, we actually bought Alaska shortly after the civil war; and oil wasn't discovered until some ten years after Alaska became a state.

Oh, those pesky facts that get in the way of a good notion! Some people are just better than others at being flexible about those darn facts.

  3. Glad you're feeling happy today K-Rod, or was it that you were laughing at Glenn Beck? Hard to know, but either way, I agree.

DG, I figured it out. When you put a link in at the top, it links to the title. Click the title and you'll be taken to the link. I'll update the post as well.

  4. K,

Some kinds of things aren't funny. Others are funny but not in the way you want. For example, your commentary about BDS is laughable. You criticized Bush yourself, and I mostly just agreed with you. No one needs to be deranged to revile Bush, most moderate Republicans I know consider him the worst President since Buchanon.

I don't permit things which are grossly insulting, so I suggest you learn some more civility or I'll start editing your posts to remove vile comments - failing that, they'll be deleted.

One other comment, links to Anti-Strib are something akin to links to Free Press or Daily KOS or Huffington Post. In short, none are seen as unbaised, and so they carry zero weight.

  5. Frankly, the Palin pick IS funny - laughably so. It points out just how base you righties can be sometimes. You wanted Caribou Barbie mostly because she was cute - and despite her vapid, dishonest nature. Wow. Truly, a picture is worth 1,000 words. Wow.

  6. I would like to point out a few flaws in the Alaskan Independence Party reasoning, (not that it really matters, as I don't see them getting any more than some press attention anytime soon)

The UN doesn't control the process by which the US adds states. The US Constitution does. Alaska was a US Territory long before the United Nations was even conceived.

The US purchased Alaska from Russia in the 1800's. Congress reluctantly approved such a purchase, although it was widely viewed as a waste of money at the time. Of course, Alaska has proven to be strategically valuable, as has the value of the gold and other mineral rights that have been found in the state.

The important thing here though, isn't whether Sarah Palin's husband was a member of the Alaskan Independence Party. He has the right, like all US Citizens, to belong to whatever political organization he chooses, no matter how silly. The important thing is that Sarah Palin apparently lied about it, and then attempted to cover up the lie. A politician lying is nothing new, of course. Regrettably, many people seem to expect it of our politicians these days. It shows that Ms. Palin has no more regard for the truth than King George (bush), or Clown Prince Chaney, or any of the other previous administration.

  7. K - again, do you anticipate commenting on the subject some time, or just throwing out garbage?

    I don't really need trolls.

Care to defend AIP, Todd Palin or Sarah's attempt to lie?

  8. I thought I would grab a sandwich and coffee, and browse what was new on Penigma. Instead I am the spectator at a pissing match (pardon my language).

K-rod, under "What Is Not Said", I welcomed you here and specifically invited you to comment on the topic. I am still hoping you will do so, and I am also interested in your opinions on the Alaskan Independence Party etc.

What is not interesting is this kind of childish hit-and-run stupidity.

Penigma - I don't know if this is unique to my experience, or a more general problem, but I could not activate the link provided by K-rod. Any idea why it is not working? (And yes, K-rod, I was interested enough to follow the link. I hope you will be reciprocal.)

  9. "May I invite you to comment on that specific topic here?"

DG, I tried to publish a comment. It was a brilliant comment by PenigmaBlog standards. Many times the truth is hidden or even deleted.

"Go look it up if you doubt me."
    Oh bother."

More cryptic than clear K-rod. Unless you consider brilliant synonymous with egregiously offensive. If you have a serious dissenting opinion, and can be civil, please comment.

  10. K-Rod,

As I understand it, the entire topic of this original blog entry was about Sarah Palin's attempt to lie about her husband's involvement in a political party. Her own staff advised her to just ignore the issue, that it was not something that was really germaine to the campaign, but she chose to ignore their advice. (BTW, I think their advice was sound: If she had ignored the issue, it would have become a non-item)

Since then, people have brought up the Alaskan Independence Party. While I find the claims of the Alaskan Independence Party to be specious at best, they have an absolute right to engage in political activity no matter how wacky I believe it to be. The Alaskan Independence Party has nothing to do with President Obama, nor does it have anything to do with our national deficit.

Our national deficit is due, in large part, to a Congress (with both Democrats and Republicans in it) voting in favor of a war that was unnecessary and ill advised. The fact that they were lied to by the Bush administration mitigates the blame, but doesn't absolve them of it. Once it was discovered that "oops... there are no WMD", it was too late to just pack the bags and go home. However, to compound the error, the administration under King George will go down in history as one of the most incompetent and short-sighted in the way they conducted the war. It wasn't until the American people turned the Republicans out of Congress that King George realized that there was a shake up needed in the conduct of the war. Will King George go down in history as our most stupid president? I don't know, but he certainly is a viable candidate for that honor.

Under a Republican administration in the early 1980's, the financial industry was deregulated to the extent that almost anything goes. This meant that the banking and mortgage brokers were free to create very innovative (and ultimately disastrous) loan products that in large part led to the mess that we're in today. The same Republicans also blocked (at the insistence of the auto industry) higher fuel economy standards, and so therefore when fuel prices reached a critical point, at the beginning of the burst of the housing bubble, the damage done to the auto industry and our financial system was almost inevitable. The gist of it is this: The trillions of dollars that has been approved is necessary to prevent the recession from sliding even further, and becoming a depression.

Has this created a problem for our children and grandchildren? Probably so, because we haven't learned to accept that when we want something, it doesn't come for free. The American people demand various entitlements. However, no one wants to pay taxes. I could go on and on, but I'm straying off the topic.

President Obama's deficit is huge, but it could have been much, much less if he weren't cleaning up the mess from years of financial irresponsibility by republican administrations.

  11. K-Rod, your posts have neither been deleted nor edited.

Sarah Palin was in the news, for lying, or attempting to.

You may WANT to chose the topic, but that's not your perogative entirely. This topic was Palin's deceit - and her attempt to cover up her husband's conduct.

I could care less about AIP, than Palin's clear propensity for VAST dishonesty, including to her own staff. THAT actually IS relevant, like it or not, since she's your party's primary candidate for 2012.

  12. K-

Your assertion is wrong. I've not touched your comments.

The fact is, like you, I've tried to post, not just on this blog, but on many others, and sometimes, the post goes into the ether. I think it has to do with security requirements (like the word you have to type) not getting passed properly.

So, thank you for your apology for a false accusation in advance.

I've deleted your comments in the past for being grossly insulting, your comment here so far has reinforced that image almost without reservation (except for two posts) - I make no apology for deleting your comments and banning you from the site. I rescinded that ban as a measure of forgiveness, and to hopefully provoke discussion. If I had an axe to grind with your 'facts' - why the heck would I not have just deleted all of your supposed fact based posts.

As far as the deficit goes, K-Rod, what do you suggest be done - I understand you oppose the bailout, but that's history, it aint going to change (much that you might want it to) - to be clear, I don't support changing it.

I'll entertain your topic (as long as you are civil) as long as you reply regarding Palin's OBVIOUS dishonesty. I think that's more than fair, and more than you've done in the past.

  13. BTW, K, (et.al.) one way to avoid losing your post is to copy it into memory (ctrl-c) just before submitting.

That way, if it goes into the ether, you have a copy to re-issue/re-post.

I do that from time to time when the post I'm making is long and I don't want to have to try to recreate it.

Sorry yours was lost - outside of my control, but, for what it's worth.

  14. K-rod, I don't believe Penigma deleted anything, nor did I, and I have the same admin access.

Your post never showed up. I have no idea why, but it appears to be a one-time glitch.

  15. K-rod, I don't know why some of your comments have made it through and not others.

I can tell you that whatever the problem is, your comments do not appear to have made it to review for posting.

  16. Let me add my apologies for any difficulty you are experiencing with posting to Penigma.

  17. KRod,

There are some things I'll tolerate, others I won't.

I told you the truth, accuse me of lying again, and you're posts will be gone, no if's, no ands, no buts. Did you not read the post I made where i started with, "I had a longer post but it got eaten" in the other thread.

Your conduct is beneath contempt, I'm tolerating your presence against my better judgement. I even offered you a method to avoid the problem (or at least mitigate it).

  18. K-rod, the blog has a rule that commments made w/in the first 24 hours will be accepted, but those after will be moderated.

There aren't any outstanding comments to moderate that I saw, but I will look again.

In the meantime, grow up, no one is doing ANYTHING to squelch your comments , yet.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Your comments have now been published. They were sitting unmoderated, why yours are being moderated I have no idea. Some of yours aren't, some are, there is no rhyme or reason, and there was NOTHING intentionial.

However, my apology that they were unknowingly delayed. Now, care to apologize for accusing me of lying?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sigh

    Gentlemen.

I recognize that you have... history between you that is confrontational.

K-rod, I will repeat my sincere apologies for the difficulties you have encountered.

That said - use your head. There would be no point to deleting those posts, but letting others through when you could be simply barred from commenting at all. It would be easier to let NONE through if that kind of interference were taking place. I do not KNOW why there is a problem; but there IS some kind of problem.

I side with Penigma on being insulted at the accusation of liar, and I side with Penigma that it is reasonable to request you remain reasonably on topic. If these topics are not to your liking, I invite you to comment when topics are posted that do satisfy your interest.

I trust that I have been clear as well as courteous.

  21. K,

The other thing for you to think about, assuming you want to take the time to do so, is that you're suggesting we're somehow specifically stopping some posts while letting others through. Nonsense. We had no idea anything was being blocked until you posted your comment about it requiring Blog Author review... at that point it went from 'stuff gets lost' as happens to us all, to clearly some comments are, for no apparent reason, being sent to be moderated.

  22. If the pissing contest is officially concluded...

I have a piece to finish for that OTHER blog I'm writing for...

    ReplyDelete
  23. No, K, let's go with history here.

You commented that they were getting lost, and you FALSELY asserted they were being wilfully squelched.

That was wrong on both counts. It stayed that way until you provided some information which indicated that it was being blocke for site-owner review. Once I saw that, I IMMEDIATELY reviewed your comments and published them, unedited, and in total.

Your skewed view of history is pretty telling. As far as Palin goes - we're happy to have her in office - not the Presidency - but in office, because she continues to show she's simply Bush in a skirt. For as long as she continues putting her foot in her mouth (as she did when she resigned) - we can be assured she'll never do (again) what Bush did to the country, all for the best. So actually, we'd be happy to have her stay. She's a wonderful clown.

  24. K-Rod,

I believe that President Clinton should have been convicted by the senate and removed from office for his perjury. There. I've said it. And yes, I'm a democrat. I have a thing about perjury, its one of those crimes I won't look at and ignore. Now... while we're looking at honesty and politicians, should we investigate Sarah Palin the same way that President Clinton was? Over the course of nearly 4 years, and at a cost of unknown millions of dollars? On the chance of eventually finding something on which we can haul her into court? It may amaze you, but I think although she's a liar (and a not very talented one at that), she hasn't committed perjury, and as such, I'm content to just let the issue die.

I don't understand, by the way, what President Clinton's impeachment and trial has to do with this topic anyway. (I note that there were nearly 20 Republican senators who voted to acquit him of the charges.)
