Stewie Mills the turd -- LYING again about Nolan,SO desperate to win CD 8 any way he can

‘Friends of Stewart Mills’ sent out a mailer recently, calling Rick Nolan out of touch, illustrated by an automatic pistol hanging by a threat attached to the trigger apparatus.

Apparently they are upset that Nolan doesn’t think assault rifles with a hundred or more rounds of ammo are really what constitutes hunting weapons.  From that the Friends of Stewie Mills III get positively hysterical with paranoia.

Friends of Stewart Mills show most of their campaign contributions (approximately 67%) coming from ‘large individual contributions’, not from ‘ordinary people’, and does not differentiate between in-state contributors and out of state donors. And of course, Stewie III is now ‘self-funding’ his actual campaign.


As of mid-July, per MinnPost:
More notably, Mills, an executive at Fleet Farm, his family’s company, has begun to pump some of his personal wealth into the campaign, cutting a personal check for $121,000 (that number isn’t reflected in his fundraising total). That’s Mills’ first major contribution to his own campaign. This wasn’t exactly unexpected—he had never ruled out self-funding before Election Day, and Mills’ wealth means he could afford to spend a lot more on this race if he wants to. His stake in Fleet Farm is worth between $41 million and $150 million.

It claims Rick Nolan has no respect for 2nd Amendment rights, and that “our gun rights are hanging by a thread’.

In the same period, we have a Mendota Heights police officer killed by a career criminal, a mass shooting in a Minneapolis bar over the weekend that injured 11 people (5 women, 6 men according to police reports). This morning, there was a shooting at a gas station. Earlier this month, 3 people were injured in a drive by shooting in North Minneapolis. Not long before that, a man was shot after a bus confrontation. And a Bemidji man was arrested for attempted murder for shooting a 17 year old girl as she stood on her deck, for telling him not to ride his lawn mower through her yard. Earlier this morning, a gunman at a gas station gunned down his unarmed passenger, shooting him multiple times.

That is a lot of gun violence in a little over a two week period, in what is generally considered one of the SAFEST states from gun violence.

As noted by gnom news, re the West St. Paul shooting of the police officer:

The fatal shooting is the latest in a surge of violence against police — more than 70 officers have died this year. Police killings by firearms are up 65 percent this year after a historic low in 2013.

So what were Nolan’s actual votes and positions on gun control? According to NNCNOW, the group of news stations up on the ‘range’ in northern Minnesota:

Fact Check: Rick Nolan claims Stewart Mills attack ad “a big lie”
DULUTH, Minn. (NNCNOW.com) — U.S. Congressman Rick Nolan is claiming a new attack ad by his Republican opponent contains some false information.
In a race that is among the most fiercely contested in the country, Nolan accuses Stewart Mills of using smear campaign tactics.
“Far too many politicians in Washington have no respect for the Second Amendment,” the ad says.
The thirty second ad slams Nolan’s “F” rating with the National Rifle Association.
“This ad is a dishonest, “big lie” smear campaign tactic that couldn’t be further from the truth,” Nolan said.
The ad continues, “…In Washington, he (Nolan) has repeatedly voted to take away your rights.”
In fact, since Nolan returned to the House of Representatives in 2013, there have been few votes on major gun legislation.
The Mills’ campaign points to Nolan’s support on the Thompson King Amendment, which would require people to clear a background check before purchasing a gun.
The campaign also cites a vote Nolan made that some say would have implemented a gun registry, but that vote was 36 years ago.
“I think there is no better point there than it shows Rick Nolan is out of touch with the values of this District,” Mike Lukach, Mills’ Campaign Manager said. “He went on national television within a month of him being in office to endorse gun control.”
That is not the whole story.
Nolan did appear on Face the Nation, but he did not endorse complete gun control.
“I don’t need an assault weapon to shoot a duck,” Nolan said on Face the Nation. “I think they ought to be banned and I think we need to put a ban on the amount of shells you can carry in a magazine.”
“Congressman Rick Nolan is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment,” Kendal Killian, Nolan’s Campaign Manager said. “And the accusation that he (Nolan) doesn’t support the Second Amendment is just a complete lie.”
The Nolan campaign hit back saying Mills suggested raising taxes on guns in a 2013 Youtube video.
“The ATF collects approximately $24 billion a year in excise fees,” Mills said in the video. “If we need to increase the 11% ATF excise fee on firearms to 15% or whatever to pay for it, we need to do that.”
The Mills campaign said the comment was taken out of context.
One more thing you need to know.
Mills’ ad says, “Around Election time, Rick will put on his hunter’s orange and grab a rifle…”
“The accusation that Congressman Nolan only hunts on election season, that is also a complete lie,” Killian said. “Congressman Nolan has been hunting for over 50 years.”
The Nolan campaign showed NNC numerous family photos of the Congressman hunting with family throughout past years.
The Eighth Congressional District has one of the highest populations of gun owners, so voters can expect to see more ad’s that target gun owners this election cycle.

Looking at legislation INTRODUCED by Nolan, I suppose you could stretch this to be an attack on the 2A rights of CORPORATIONS…. but that would be ridiculous.

One of the aspects of Nolans record noted by trackgov.us is that Nolan is one of the BETTER members of Congress working both across partisan lines on legislation, and in cooperation with the Senate in order to make legislation more effective, and was one of the more active legislators for government transparency.

Looking at gun control related legislation in Congress in 2013 and 2014, most legislation has been referred to committees on which Nolan does not sit, and therefore could not vote. I don’t see any legislation for a general vote that could possibly be defined as gun control legislation in the House of Representatives during Nolan’s recent term in office.

It IS true, Nolan is in favor of background checks – that is NOT an assault on 2A rights. It is an attempt to keep bad people from getting their hands on guns, and clearly from our recent experience here in Minnesota (which is BETTER than most states) there is good reason to do that.

And while the NRA might give Nolan a bad grade for that, even a majority of MEMBERS of the NRA support background checks for gun purchases. It is pretty meaningless what grade the NRA gives a candidate, when 74% of the NRA’s OWN MEMBERS support criminal background checks for ALL gun purchases, as do 90% of ALL AMERICANS.

Currently, background checks are required in sales by federally licensed gun dealers but not for gun sales by private sellers. President Barack Obama wants to require criminal background checks for all gun sales. The National Rifle Association, which opposes universal background checks, has suggested that an expansion would fail to rope in criminals.
As noted in a January 2013 fact check by our colleagues in Washington, Republican pollster Frank Luntz’s organization, Luntz Global, conducted a May 2012 poll of 945 gun owners nationwide, half of whom were gun owners who were “current or lapsed” members of the National Rifle Association and half of whom were non-NRA gun owners. PolitiFact identified two other 2013 polls of gun owners. A Pew Research Center poll taken of 1,502 adults from Jan. 9-13, 2013, found 85 percent of some 529 polled gun owners in favor of making private gun sales and sales at gun shows subject to background checks — nearly identical to the Luntz poll. The gun-owner results had a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points. A CBS/New York Times poll conducted of 1,110 adults from Jan. 11-15, 2013, showed that 85 percent of respondents living in a household with an NRA member supported universal background checks.
More recently, according to the results of a national January 2013 poll presented in the March 21, 2013, New England Journal of Medicine, 84 percent of gun owners and 74 percent of NRA members supported requiring a universal background-check system for all gun sales. The poll was conducted by GfK Knowledge Networks for researchers led by Colleen L. Barry, an associate professor of health policy and management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
The January Pew poll found 85 percent of all respondents in favor of making private gun sales and sales at gun shows subject to background checks, with comparable support from Republicans, Democrats and independents, Pew said. The margin of error for the entire sample was 2.9 percentage points.
The CBS/New York Times poll indicated that 92 percent of all the respondents favor background checks for all potential gun buyers. The poll had an overall margin of error of three percentage points.
PolitiFact Georgia, looking into a similar claim about support for universal checks, noted a Fox News poll conducted Jan. 15-17, 2013, of 1,008 registered voters. Ninety one percent of respondents said they favor “requiring criminal background checks on all gun buyers, including those buying at gun shows and private sales.”
A Quinnipiac University national survey of 772 registered voters, taken Jan. 30 through Feb. 4, 2013, found 92 percent supporting background checks for all gun buyers. The survey, pointed out by Everhart, had a margin of error of 2.3 percentage points.
A subsequent Quinnipiac University survey, taken of 1,944 registered voters from Feb. 27, 2013 through March 4, 2013, found 88 percent in favor of background checks for all gun buyers. The poll had a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points.

Nolan is in touch with Americans, including apparently CD8 Minnesotans, and supports their interests and safety with real responses to risks in balance with freedom.

Frat Brat Stewie Mills does NOT represent the interests of Minnesotans, nor is he being honest with the voters in CD 8 about his opponent. Instead he is lying about Nolan to appeal to the low information, single issue voter, pandering to ignorance and irrational fears.

Shame on bratty little Stewie Mills; because that is all he has to offer.  He’s got nothing else.

Can Bowe Bergdahl Be Tied to 6 Lost Lives? Facts Are Murky

But a review of casualty reports and contemporaneous military logs from the Afghanistan war shows that the facts surrounding the eight deaths are far murkier than definitive — even as critics of Sergeant Bergdahl contend that every American combat death in Paktika Province in the months after he disappeared, from July to September 2009, was his fault.


All across Afghanistan, that period was a time of ferocious fighting. President Obama had decided to send a surge of additional troops to improve security, but they had not yet arrived. In Paktika, the eight deaths during that period were up from five in the same three months the previous year. Across Afghanistan, 122 Americans died in that period, up from 58 in 2008.

In addition, a senior insurgent commander known as Mullah Sangeen, who was part of the Taliban-linked Haqqani network, had been carrying out attacks in the area for several years. A joint military statement by American and Afghan security forces released a month before Sergeant Bergdahl vanished warned that the mullah had brought in “hundreds of foreign fighters.”

Facts are often obscured in the fog of the battlefield, witnesses have incomplete vantage points and the events are five years in the past now. But an archive of military reports logging significant activities in America’s war in Afghanistan offers a contemporaneous written record of events in Paktika that summer. The archive was made public by Chelsea Manning, formerly known as Pvt. Bradley Manning, who is serving a 35-year prison sentence for the leak.

The first two deaths the critics link to Sergeant Bergdahl involved a major assault by insurgents on a combat outpost called Zerok on July 4, 2009. Their view is that the Taliban knew the Americans were stretched thin by the search mission and took advantage of that opportunity to try to overrun it.

Where does my claim about swiftboating come in? Here, the fact that all these interviews of angry men who are claiming things about Bowe Bergdahl that do not appear to be true (however much they might believe it) is being arranged by GOP strategists. Those strategists make their livings off smearing people, especially our President.

They don't care if they also smear a member of our military - just like they did not care if they lied about now Sec. of State Kerry. It's all grist for the smear campaign mill, and facts be damned. Conservatives don't know or need or want to know what the facts are. They just gin up excuses for hating the president, and lies are fine for that.

GOP Strategists Are Arranging Media Interviews To Attack Bowe Bergdahl
On Tuesday, BuzzFeed identified Richard Grenell, who once served as an aide to U.S. ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton and later worked for Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign, as playing a key role in publicizing Bergdahl's critics.

"My role was to ask the firm to help facilitate the interviews for free. Brad Chase agreed to do it. He is handling all the requests. He isn't political. I originally spoke to Cody, the leader, via Twitter then asked the firm," Grenell told The Huffington Post's Sam Stein.

Certainly Bergdahl's release on Saturday raises legitimate questions about the circumstances surrounding his capture, the legality of the exchange and whether it merited the release of five Guantanamo Bay detainees. But the fact that Republican operatives are shopping around interviews behind the scenes meant to stir opposition to the Obama administration threatens to turn the debate over a prisoner of war into another partisan slugfest ahead of the November midterm elections.

While conservative Twitter's Bergdahl backlash is unquestionably over the top, Republican lawmakers have also changed their tune on America's only prisoner of war in Afghanistan. As The Huffington Post's Amanda Terkel and Sam Stein reported Tuesday, GOP lawmakers upset with Obama for releasing five Taliban detainees from Guantanamo Bay in exchange for Bergdahl repeatedly urged the administration to do everything they could do to bring him home.

Face the Nation, about Facing the Responsibility

On Sunday January 9, 2011, Robert Schieffer made an excellent observation on Face the Nation, after interviewing members of the House and Senate from both the Republican and Democratic side of the aisle.  The entire half hour was devoted to the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, ending  in a personal segment by the ever-articulate Schieffer, entitled :

"Rhetoric and Its Consequences: Violence Stirred by Inflammatory Political Discourse Endangers Our Way of Life"

We live as we were reminded yesterday in a dangerous, hair-trigger time, where tempers always seem near the boiling point and patience seems a lost trait.
Democracy's arguments have never been pretty, but technology has changed the American dialogue.

Because we can now know of problems instantly, we expect answers immediately. And when we don't get them, we let everyone know in no uncertain terms.

I was particularly taken by this next part, given the numerous recent posts here, about the number of false accusation made by the right without regard for the consequences.To put this observation in perspective, let me summarize - and these are only a few; by no means is this an exhaustive list.

We had the ice-cream bribery voter fraud hoax, then there was the 103 frivolous ballot voter fraud hoax, followed by the disabled voter fraud hoax, followed in the past few days by the TSA harassing returning soldiers hoax, the factcheck.org indictment of the 'job-killing and budget-busting' inaccuracy, the various false claims that earned pants-on-fire ratings for false accusations about government jobs versus private sector jobs, the false statements that earned the lie of the year award for false statements about health care reform, the Glenn Beck lie about the city in Ohio doing just fine without accepting federal assistance that he uses as an example of why no one should need any assistance, oh and the snow plow slowdown in New York City.....this is just a partial list of false claims and accusations made by the right.  The right making up false accusations about liberals, democrats and unions is practically a cottage industry.

Schieffer went on to say:

We scream and shout - hurl charges without proof. Those on the other side of the argument become not opponents but enemies.

Dangerous, inflammatory words are used with no thought of consequence. All's fair if it makes the point. Worse, some make great profit just fanning the flames. [emphasis mine - DG]

Schieffer continues:

Which wouldn't amount to much if the words reached only the sane and the rational, but the new technology insures a larger audience. Those with sick and twisted minds hear us, too, and are sometimes inflamed by what the rest of us often discard as hollow and silly rhetoric

And so violence becomes part of the argument.

Meanwhile the Republicans on Face the Nation and all the other 'Talking Heads' programming are desperately trying to distance themselves from their own inflammatory rhetoric, claiming the crime was not political, that there is no connection between their attempt to inflame and people responding in an angry or violent way.

Update to the Giffords Shooting

From the msn news (read the whole article here):

Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was the target of a gunman whom he described as mentally unstable and possibly acting with an accomplice. He said Giffords was among at least 13 people wounded in the melee. Six people were killed, including Arizona's chief federal judge, a 9-year-old girl and an aide for the Democratic lawmaker. He said the rampage ended only after two people tackled the assailant.

While the list of victims has been made public, I have not yet seen identified the two heroes who tackled the 22 year old gunman. Another person of interest thought to have assisted the gunman is sought.  The political aspects of this attack are outlined by the Pima County sheriff , below.

2010 Republican Lies We Can Look Forward to Seeing Repeated, and Repeated Some More, in 2011

For some reason, Republicans love to try to make unions, especially public employee unions, out to be the villain of their alternate reality narrative.  Politifact gave T-Paw a pants-on-fire rating, the most severe category, reserved for calling the perpetrator of the false statement an outright liar.

Politifact.com wrote:

'Pawlenty wrote that government employees, especially those who are unionized, have become unfairly advantaged compared to private-sector workers, through a "silent coup, an inside job engineered by self-interested politicians and fueled by campaign contributions.

"Across the country, at every level of government, the pattern is the same: Unionized public employees are making more money, receiving more generous benefits, and enjoying greater job security than the working families forced to pay for it with ever-higher taxes, deficits and debt," Pawlenty wrote. He even repeated what has become a major Republican talking point -- that "federal employees receive an average of $123,049 annually in pay and benefits, twice the average of the private sector."

"The majority of union members today no longer work in construction, manufacturing or 'strong back' jobs," Pawlenty wrote. "They work for government, which, thanks to President Obama, has become the only booming 'industry' left in our economy. Since January 2008, the private sector has lost nearly 8 million jobs while local, state and federal governments added 590,000."

Remember, these are 'pants-on-fire' lies, not honest factually inaccurate statements.  Let me remind our readers that the current crop of Republicans don't have any of those 'new ideas' they kept promising they were going to unveil.....eventually.  All they have are the failed policies of George W. Bush, and in a few cases, the failed trickle-down policies of Ronald Reagan, vehemently being discredited by their designer, David Stockman.  These lies are the set up for the ill-informed to be sold another pack of the same lies by the incoming members of Congress, much like the nonsense spouted by that other inaccurate Republican from Minnesota, Michele Bachmann.  It's not a coincidence that TPaw is the writer; this is part of his set up for his presidential bid.  TPaw is not popular in Minnesota as a presidential candidate; his only hope is to go outside of Minnesota - travel which has characterized his last term as governor.

Back to the politifact.com analysis of Pawlenty's claims.

In January 2008, total private-sector employment in the United States stood at 115,562,000. By November 2010, the most current month available, that number had sunk to 108,278,000 -- a drop of roughly 7.3 million jobs. That pretty close to the "nearly 8 million" figure that Pawlenty cited. (Almost two-thirds of those job losses, incidentally, happened while George W. Bush was president.)

But Pawlenty's public-sector figures were problematic. The BLS has a category called government employment -- which encapsulates local, state and federal employment, just as Pawlenty had defined it. Over the same period, the number of government jobs went from 22,379,000 to 22,261,000 -- a decrease of 118,000, rather than an increase of 590,000, as Pawlenty had written.

At first we were flummoxed about how Pawlenty got the numbers so wrong. We called BLS to make sure we weren't overlooking another data set that measured the same subject, and spokesman Gary Steinberg confirmed that we were using exactly the same numbers he would use.

We also looked at federal employment trends over the same period, on the guess that Pawlenty might have meant to refer to federal jobs, rather than all government jobs. By this calculation, the number of jobs did increase, rather than decrease, but the amount was only one-sixth of what Pawlenty had indicated. Over that period, federal employment rose from 2,739,000 to 2,837,000 -- 98,000 jobs in all.

The Bush Tax Cuts, or...What the Hell is Wrong with Republicans' Math?

The Right is pushing the retention of the Bush Tax Cuts like an evangelical preacher pushes the Gospel, at an old fashioned Bible-thumping tent revival meetin'.

Except that the Bush Tax Cuts, for the wealthy, are anything but an economic gospel.  They are ruinous. While an amazing number of middle and working class seem to have missed the tax cuts they already have received under the Obama administration.

George W. Bush is trying to rewrite the history of his two administrations to make it look like he was not an enormous aching, throbbing, hemorrhaging disaster.  He was.

He WAS a walking, talking disaster, one of the all-time worst presidents in history.  The Bush policies left us with disastrous financial collapse, AND some of the worst unemployment in the history of this country.  An approximate total population of more than 300 million, we have in the vicinity of 25 to 27 million unemployed, which doesn't count the underemployed who are qualified for better jobs, but who instead find themselves among the working poor below the poverty line.  These figures represent FAILED REPUBLICAN POLICIES - FAILED TAX POLICIES, FAILED JOB CREATION POLICIES.

The ONLY people who benefit, and then only short term not long term, are a few of the wealthiest 1% to 2% of the population.  THEY have gotten richer while everyone else suffered and struggled and the economy collapsed under these policies.  THEY pay the Republicans (and occasionally a few conservative democrats too) to parrott these lies, and they pay well.  They STEAL elections by funding of these lies. (more on that in a future post)

These numbers have slowly but steadily improved under Democrats and the Obama Administration.  Too change horses in mid stream NOW is folly, it is self-defeating impatience.  The third quarter results for corporate profits are the highest since records were kept; this administration is not, by any meaningful metric, anti-business, (despite the litany of misinformation and disinformation you hear from the right - especially Faked cable News.

Georgie Porgie is making the rounds of the talking heads circuit, bragging about how his tax cuts created 1.1 million jobs.  Hello? That is NOT a good result in job production over EIGHT years in a nation the size of the USA!

What he leaves out are two important things - the good jobs, the factory and other production jobs, the IT jobs, those were being outsourced at unprecedented rates.  The piddling few jobs that were created were almost entirely low paying jobs.

But worse than that - if you look at the numbers, while Georgie Duh-b'ya may have created those  1.1 million jobs in the private sector.........he lost many millions more of those jobs in the final years of his presidency, resulting in an overall LOSS of jobs to our economy that was devastating; it was outrageously, avoidably catastophic. 

AND  'W' and the Republicans saddled us all with monumental national debt.

Contrary to the FALSE claims by the Right this election campaign cycle, turns out ........... IT DID.

IT DID.
