We can see what happens with this kind of consolidation with Rupert Murdoch's empire as the worst example. We have the phone hacking and influence peddling scandals in the UK -- and here. We have Fox News acting as the propaganda arm of the GOP, promoting factual inaccuracies and fake stories to disinform as well as misinform viewers -- viewers who appear to WANT to be mislead.
But all of us are at risk for the media to have too much control, limitation and even alteration over what we know.
A free and independent fourth estate is essential to a democracy. Media this concentrated in the hands of a few corporations, where corporations already disproportionately attempt to influence government, is a recipe for disaster.
