Nimrods with Guns - Why We Should Require Eye Tests

This is actually sad, but at least in this case of abuse and injury by firearm, there was no malice.

It goes to prove that people with firearms are a lot less safe than they claim, despite their frequent assurances that gosh, we should TRUST gun owners and gun carriers not to hurt anyone they shouldn't, or rely on them to safely hit what they aim at, when they can't clearly see it.

We require an eye test, rechecked at regular intervals for drivers; we should do the same for EVERYONE who handles a firearm.  Gun nuts view this as a terrible intrusion on their unfettered access to weapons that is unconstitutional.  Except that there is nothing in the 2nd Amendment barring such testing, and every reason to see it as fair, reasonable, an most of all an objectively measured requirement.  If you also look at the most recent Wisconsin mass shooting, there is a good argument to be made for mental health testing too, but there should be no argument for eye tests from anyone, anywhere.

The evidence that people with firearms are not safe, and can't see what they shoot at, is too frequently as obvious as the top row of an eye chart.

From Pennsylvania, another state with too-lax gun laws where any nimrod can get a gun easily, and use it carelessly.

9-year-old girl shot after relative mistakes her for skunk

'Nimrod' is the best possible term to use here, for those of you who have a certain reverence for our language. As someone who is occasionally lectured by fundamentalist Christians who aspire to lecture me on Biblical topics, let me share with those of you less into religious trivia that Nimrod, aka Nemrod, the son of Cush from Genesis, a 'Mighty Hunter before God', and associated with Assyria and the Tower of Babel for those into biblical archeology and history. In more formal usage, it referenced accomplished hunters generally.

Those of you who are more acquainted with modern cultural trivia references would recognize it as snark from classic Bugs Bunny cartoons, and would also be more familiar with the reference to someone as a klutz, as stupid, or as a screw up.

I think we can safely assume the latter definition, not the former applies in this incident.  This is a perfect example of some old guy who shouldn't be shooting anything more dangerous than spit balls out of a straw.

from MSN and NBC news:
A 9-year-old Pennsylvania girl was shot in the shoulder with a shotgun at a Halloween party Saturday evening by a relative who mistook her for a skunk, a Beaver County dispatcher confirmed to NBC News.
The shooting, which took place in New Sewickley Township, Pa. came in at 8:02 p.m. on Saturday night. Police told WPXI.com that the girl was wearing a black outfit and a black hat attached to a white tassel.
The girl was transported to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., about 50 minutes away, where she underwent surgery, WPXI.com reported.
No arrests have been made, and the case remains under investigation, according to the dispatcher.
Which raises the obvious question.......would she have been safer from being shot if she were wearing a hoodie?
